Lufthansa announced the cancellation of 20,000 short-haul flights through October, aiming to save approximately 40,000 tonnes of fuel as kerosene prices doubled following the outbreak of the war in Iran.
The German airline stated these schedule adjustments will reduce "unprofitable short-haul flights" across its network. The initial wave of 120 daily cancellations began Monday and extends through May.
This decision follows Lufthansa's April 16 announcement to permanently withdraw 27 operational aircraft from its Lufthansa CityLine unit, citing strike disruptions and surging fuel costs amid Middle East tensions to limit losses. International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol warned last Thursday that Europe could face only six weeks of jet fuel supply if current disruptions persist, highlighting growing European concerns over fuel supply risks from the Middle East conflict.
