Tech giant VK, with full Kremlin backing, is rapidly expanding its Max super-app, a messaging and e-commerce platform modeled on China’s WeChat, to offer diverse services and curb the reach of Western tech platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp within Russia.
The Kremlin has long sought to restrict internet freedoms and diminish the influence of Western tech platforms that have garnered substantial user bases in Russia. Max, developed by VK, is now making this objective achievable by offering services ranging from taxi-hailing to electronic passport wallets.
Pro-Kremlin celebrities actively promote Max as a secure alternative to popular messaging platforms Telegram and WhatsApp, which Russian censors are currently throttling. This initiative represents a significant move by the Russian government to consolidate control over its digital landscape, mirroring China's model, and effectively creating a state-sanctioned digital ecosystem.
