The Trump administration, through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), reversed the cancellation of visas for several thousand foreign students across major U.S. universities on April 25, 2025, restoring their active status following numerous lawsuits against the unannounced removals.
This turnaround was not officially announced by the government but conveyed during several court sessions. Deputy Prosecutor Elizabeth Kurlan stated in federal court in Oakland, California, that ICE is developing a new policy framework for SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record terminations, ensuring affected cases remain active or are reactivated.
This decision alleviates significant anxiety among young foreign nationals on American campuses, who faced unannounced visa revocations over the past few weeks. The previous cancellations had prompted dozens of lawsuits against the administration.
