Electricity Supply · Energy Diversification · Tesla · UK Energy Market
Tesla Energy Ventures has obtained a license from Britain's energy regulator, Ofgem, to supply electricity to households and businesses across England, Scotland, and Wales.
This strategic approval marks a significant expansion of Tesla's energy business beyond its current operations in Texas, U.S., where its "Tesla Electric" division offers specialized plans for EV drivers and Powerwall owners. The move positions Tesla to compete in a mature UK market against established players such as British Gas, E.ON, EDF, and Octopus Energy, although its license is currently limited to electricity supply, unlike many competitors who also provide gas.
The seven-month regulatory review concluded with Ofgem emphasizing strict compliance obligations, including fair customer treatment and operational capability. This development underscores Tesla's commitment to diversifying its revenue streams and leveraging its battery technology and energy management solutions on an international scale.
