Illinois Lt.
Gov. Juliana Stratton secured the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, a significant win that underscores Gov.
JB Pritzker's formidable political influence. Pritzker, a billionaire heir, heavily endorsed Stratton, contributing $5 million to the Illinois Future PAC, which spent $14 million supporting her campaign.
Stratton garnered approximately 40% of the vote, defeating U.S. Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi (33%) and Robin Kelly (18%).
The primary was a key test for Pritzker, who is generating buzz for a potential 2028 presidential bid. The race was marked by debates on immigration policy, with Stratton advocating to abolish ICE, and by substantial campaign finance disparities.
Krishnamoorthi's campaign raised an eye-watering $30.5 million, including funds from the crypto industry and Palantir executives, dwarfing Stratton's $4 million. Pritzker's aggressive involvement drew criticism from some Democrats, who accused him of "heavy-handing" the race.
Stratton's victory solidifies Pritzker's political capital and positions a progressive voice for the general election.
