The Netherlands' new Apple Museum in Utrecht officially opens on April 2, celebrating Apple's 50-year history from its 1976 founding by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, showcasing over 5,000 artifacts including the rare Apple I. The museum recreates Apple's original garage, highlighting the company's evolution from its first product, the Apple I, designed by Wozniak and funded by Jobs' Volkswagen bus and Wozniak's HP-65 calculator sales.
Museum founder Ed Bindels and board member Antonie de Kok state the goal is to deepen visitors' understanding of Apple's vision and design language. The Apple I is a highly valuable collector's item, with one recently selling for over $1 million.
This institution is Europe's largest Apple Museum, though less than 10% of its extensive collection is currently displayed to support the narrative, concluding the journey with the iPhone.
