The Pentagon is on the verge of a showdown with AI company Anthropic over the military's use of its artificial intelligence tools.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has rejected the Defense Department's ultimatum to loosen safety restrictions on its AI model, Claude, or face being blacklisted from lucrative military contracts. The dispute centers on Anthropic's refusal to allow its AI to be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, which the company deems 'bright red lines.' The Pentagon, however, insists that it is the end user's responsibility to determine lawful use and has threatened to cancel Anthropic's $200 million contract and deem it a 'supply chain risk.' A deadline of Friday afternoon has been set for Anthropic to comply, with potential repercussions including the invocation of the Defense Production Act.

This conflict highlights the tension between AI safety concerns and military applications, with hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts and access to advanced AI at stake.
