Amazon invested an additional $5 billion in AI model developer Anthropic, with potential for up to $20 billion, securing Anthropic's commitment to spend over $100 billion on Amazon's cloud technology, including its Trainium AI chips, over the next decade.
This circular commitment ensures Anthropic receives crucial funding and up to 5 gigawatts of computing power, with one-fifth introduced this year, to develop its next-generation Claude AI models and support its surging coding tool, Claude Code. Amazon, in turn, locks in a major customer for its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud business and its in-house AI semiconductor, Trainium, while gaining a powerful AI model for its platform.
Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei emphasized the need to expand infrastructure for Claude, while Amazon Chief Executive Andy Jassy highlighted Trainium's performance. Reuters reported the agreement deepens collaboration amid intense AI industry competition.
